The range-topping Abarth model still gets a lustier version of this engine good for 160 hp and A few google searches dug up consumerReport ratings (for USA) that put Fiat (500, the only model available in the USA before the 124) at the very bottom for quality and reliability, Chrysler was also not faring well. Anecdotally, a neighbor owns a 500, which has been in the shop for going on a month, for 'warranty repairs'.

Neither are particularly reliable, but they are pretty fun when they’re working. I would really just stay away from any pre-2014 models of Mini as they are a nightmare to own. The Cooper S is more engaging to drive, but IMO the Abarth has a better exhaust note. However if you want a small fun car why not get a Mazda Miata or a VW Golf GTI
